Architect John Gerbner - Drawings & Etchings

John Gerbner’s pencil drawings and etchings which inspire us to consider natural elements as they occur as well as their use in structures…rocks, in the ground and as material for PLP camp chimneys…trees, and the wood structures they become.  See what beauty a lowly pencil can produce!

I have been interested in nature and the man-made environment since my childhood. This interest developed into drawing woods, mountains, lakes, rivers, oceans, and buildings. It also led to my profession as an architect. My artwork has been mostly in black and white. It includes drawings in pencil and ink, and also etchings. Etchings are engraved or acid-etched into metal plates of copper or zinc, then hand printed using a press in limited editions. This summer I have selected a group of 10 drawings and etchings to exhibit virtually. They include:

• Red Rock: Etching. From the trail on the north side of the stream.

• PLP Chimney: Pencil. So much stone as well at PLP. Natural and built.

• PLP Roots by the Lake: Etching. While canoeing with our youngest daughter, we came across this incredible scene on the south shore. A toppled lakeside tree with the roots over the water.

• PLP Below the Dam: Pencil. I have always been interested in the manmade in nature, including very utilitarian constructions.

• PLP Porch: Pencil. So much wood. Wood steps, wood porch and porch bench, trees, stumps, chopped wood ready for the fireplace.

• PLP Ferns: Ink. Well, not just ferns, but a very PLP scene.

• Congress Ave. – Cape May: Pencil. Drawn from a Victorian building porch where we used to stay.

• Sea Ranch: Pencil. Sea Ranch is a beautiful community on the Pacific coast about three hours north of San Francisco. It was planned in the 1970’s by an architect and landscape architect to preserve views of the ocean by holding all building back from the coast and maximizing open space by clustering homes.

• Back Yard – Orinda: Pencil. Drawn in our middle daughter’s back yard. She also took us to Sea Ranch (see above).

• Back Yard – St. Paul: Pencil. Drawn from the 3rd floor attic of our oldest daughter’s home.
